Overview

Paid advertising can put your business in front of thousands of people today. But getting attention and earning trust are two very different things.

Our client was spending approximately €3,000 per month on advertising, generating plenty of clicks but considerably fewer customers than expected.

The problem wasn’t necessarily the advertising itself. It was what happened after someone clicked.

We introduced consistent tracking across traffic sources, built a stronger media presence and compared visitors arriving through paid advertisements with those discovering the business through our marketing activities.

The results revealed a significant difference: across seven clients we tracked, visitors from our marketing activities converted approximately 25–50% better on average than visitors from paid advertising.

In our featured client case study, the difference was even more pronounced. Our marketing channels achieved a 3% conversion rate compared with just 0.5% from the original advertising campaigns.

We also optimised the existing advertisements, reducing the cost per conversion from €160 to €70. With the same monthly advertising budget, this translated into approximately 129% more conversions.

This case study explores why that happened, what we changed and why the answer wasn’t to abandon advertising, but to make every marketing channel work together.

The Problem

Our client’s advertising generated traffic, but three problems were limiting its ability to turn that traffic into customers.

Paying for clicks that don’t convert.

Paid advertising provides immediate visibility, but a click doesn’t automatically translate into trust.

People who encounter an advertisement for the first time may have no previous experience with the business, no familiarity with its reputation and no independent reason to choose it over competitors.

The numbers illustrate how widely advertising performance can vary.

WordStream’s 2026 Search Advertising Benchmarks, analysing more than 13,000 Google and Microsoft Ads campaigns across 23 industries, reported an average conversion rate of 8.18%. However, performance varied considerably depending on the industry.

This means that simply generating clicks isn’t enough. What matters is how effectively those clicks translate into actual business results.

When advertising budgets are spent attracting visitors who leave without taking action, acquisition costs quickly become difficult to justify.

Sending visitors to a website without enough proof.

Modern customers rarely make decisions based on advertising alone. Before committing to a purchase or contacting a business, they often look for independent confirmation that the company is trustworthy.

BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, while 47% said they wouldn’t use a business with fewer than 20 reviews.

Our client’s advertisements were directing potential customers to a website with limited reviews, little independent media coverage and insufficient content to establish credibility.

Visitors were arriving, but the website wasn’t giving them enough reasons to stay and take the next step.

No reliable way to compare marketing performance.

Advertising dashboards report advertising results, while website analytics collect information across multiple traffic sources.

Without consistent tracking and conversion definitions, comparing these channels becomes difficult.

Our client couldn’t confidently determine which marketing activities were generating actual customers and which were simply generating traffic.

As a result, decisions about marketing expenditure were being made using incomplete information rather than a clear picture of business performance.

The Solution

We approached the problem from three directions: measurement, reputation building and advertising optimisation.

The objective was to understand which channels generated the most valuable visitors and improve the performance of all of them.

Step 1: Measure every source consistently.

Before changing anything, we established a common measurement framework.

We defined a conversion as a meaningful customer action, such as an inquiry, booking or completed sale.

We then implemented consistent tracking across traffic sources, allowing us to compare:

This gave us a much clearer picture of where potential customers were coming from and which channels were producing results.

Step 2: Build the media presence.

We focused on establishing the credibility that the existing advertising campaigns lacked.

This involved several interconnected activities:

Reviews: Building a stronger collection of genuine customer reviews across Google and relevant industry platforms.

Articles: Securing third-party coverage in relevant publications to establish independent credibility and increase online visibility.

Social media: Maintaining consistent activity and publishing content that demonstrated the business’s expertise, experience and value.

Website: Improving the website to bring these elements together, making it easier for visitors to understand the business, evaluate its credibility and take action.

The idea was to ensure that potential customers encountered consistent evidence of the business’s reputation, regardless of where they discovered it.

Step 3: Compare traffic sources.

Over six months, we compared visitors arriving through paid advertisements with those discovering the business through our organic and media-driven marketing activities.

The difference was significant.

Visitors arriving through articles, reviews and social media had often already encountered information about the business before visiting its website.

They were more familiar with the brand, had more opportunities to evaluate its reputation and generally arrived with greater confidence.

Paid advertising visitors, particularly those encountering the business for the first time, were more likely to arrive without that background knowledge.

The result was a measurable difference in conversion performance.

Step 4: Optimise advertising instead of abandoning it.

The comparison didn’t mean paid advertising was ineffective or unnecessary.

It showed that the existing campaigns had room for improvement.

We therefore worked on making advertising more efficient while using the growing media presence to strengthen the overall customer journey.

Our optimisation process included:

Improving landing pages: Adding customer reviews, media mentions, clear service descriptions and stronger calls to action where visitors could see them immediately.

Refining targeting: Removing irrelevant search terms, inefficient audiences and placements that generated traffic without meaningful conversions.

Testing creative: Experimenting with different headlines, advertising visuals and offers, keeping the combinations that generated better results.

Retargeting: Reaching people who had already visited the website or interacted with the business, rather than relying exclusively on cold audiences.

Monitoring performance: Reviewing cost per conversion and campaign performance regularly, reallocating budget towards the activities producing the strongest results.

The goal was to create a system in which advertising generated reach while the media presence helped convert that attention into trust and business.

The Results

Over six months, we measured the performance of our marketing activities against the client’s existing paid advertising campaigns.

The results demonstrated a significant difference in conversion performance.

Individual Client Performance

MetricPaid Ads (Before Optimisation)Our Marketing ChannelsPaid Ads (After Optimisation)
Conversion rate0.5%3%2%
Cost per conversion€160€50€70
Bounce rate74%35%50%

Our marketing channels achieved a 3% conversion rate, compared with just 0.5% from the original advertising campaigns.

That’s a sixfold difference in conversion rates.

But we didn’t stop there. We also improved the performance of the existing advertising campaigns.

More Customers. Same Advertising Budget.

The client was spending approximately €3,000 per month on paid advertising.

Before optimisation, each conversion cost approximately €160. Following our optimisation work, that figure dropped to €70.

With the same monthly advertising budget, the estimated number of conversions increased from approximately 19 to 43.

That’s approximately 129% more conversions without increasing advertising expenditure.

In other words, the client was able to generate significantly more customer inquiries, bookings or sales from the same advertising budget.

Results Across Seven Clients

The individual case study wasn’t an isolated result.

We also analysed performance across seven clients to determine whether the difference was specific to one business or reflected a broader pattern.

Across the clients we tracked, our marketing activities consistently generated higher conversion rates than paid advertising.

The overall average improvement was approximately 25–50%, with some individual clients achieving considerably stronger results.

This reinforced an important finding: building a credible media presence doesn’t simply increase visibility. It can also improve the quality of the traffic reaching a business.

Conclusion

Paid advertising and an established media presence aren’t competitors. They serve different purposes, and the strongest results come from understanding how to use them together.

Earned trust improves conversion.

Articles, reviews and consistent social media activity help establish credibility before someone even visits a website. Visitors who already recognise and trust a business have fewer reasons to hesitate.

Paid advertising provides immediate reach.

Advertisements allow businesses to reach new audiences and generate traffic on demand. However, attracting visitors is only valuable when those visitors have a reason to take action.

Optimisation makes advertising more efficient.

Better landing pages, more precise targeting, consistent testing and retargeting can significantly improve the performance of existing campaigns.

Combining both creates stronger results.

A media presence builds familiarity and credibility over time, while optimised advertising helps businesses reach new audiences and convert existing demand.

The objective isn’t to choose between paid and organic marketing. It’s to create a system in which every channel contributes to measurable business growth.

Results shown represent an individual client comparison and an average across seven tracked clients. Outcomes vary depending on industry, advertising budget, offer, attribution methodology and starting performance. Results are not guaranteed.
